Elizabeth Edwards on John McCain’s Health Policy -- CJR E-mail to friends

Trudy Lieberman, Columbia Journalism Review, April 1 2008

Elizabeth Edwards told some 500 health journalists the other day that John McCain’s health care plan was like “painting lipstick on a pig,” an expression from her neck of the woods that in this case means lofty-sounding words that pretty up some ideas that could hurt ordinary people who don’t understand what’s going on; that is, unless journalists tell them. The language of his plan sounds good, she argued, making it “hard to understand what’s wrong with it. “Someone has to translate for the public.” Edwards challenged reporters to do just that.

Translating for the public is good advice for journalists about the health platforms of all three major candidates, and Edwards, of course, is a partisan. But she’s worth hearing out.

Dem approach unafforadable
Written by John P. Moliere on 04-04-2008 23:16
The article itself was very shallow. Ms. Edwards didn't really offer a criticism of the McCain plan. The Dems plan are very unaffordable...they should read about the forclosures, jobs and energy costs. How can we afford increased cost? Socking it to the small businessman who provides the majority of the jobs in AMerica, not the largest corporations, makes the hometown economy suffer even further. Keep the jobs, prime the pump, encourage HSA and all types of savings and reward that with tax credits. There ain't no pig there. Perhaps Dr. Edwards and her very rich attorney husband shopuld not dwell in the past about the poverty their parents suffered under, but look around at the current populace and ask thenmselves how this health insurance behemoth could possibly be paid for...it will only get bigger and cause a greater strin over time. John McCain is right on target. Would Ms. Lieberman please comment in a fair and balance manner on this subject. We don't need lipstick...a bit of deodorant would be fine.

John P Doesn't Understand
Written by Mark H on 04-04-2008 23:59
We pay over $7,000 per capita in the U.S. today, and get little for it. John P, like most brainwashed conservatives does not really get it. He just takes in the conservative talking points and runs with them. The truth is that for the money we pay, double every nation in the world, we should at least be ranked better than 34th by the W.H.O.

The truth is that we are being raped by a bureaucratic nightmare where doctors spend 30% of their time trying to save their patients lives while giant corporations provide barriers to health.

This is not hearsay. This is the common truth. Let’s face it, conservatism doesn’t work. Don’t believe me? Walk out your front door in America and open your eyes. You are being ripped off. Stop being an idiot.
